Naked comfort is a study into alternatives to upholstered furniture, and the processes that are involved in bringing them to market. The project was inspired by a visit to high end furniture factories, and observations of the incredibly complex, unconsidered and unsustainable constructions of many familiar designs. I wanted to turn this inside out, in an attempt to make the most simple, straightforward and visually uncomplicated comfort furniture possible without compromising on practicality and ergonomics. The outcome aims to elevate very rudimentary methods of fixing wood together to form a frame, usually hastily completed and hidden deep within a sofa or armchair, under many layers of stapled foam, fabric, springs and straps. To create a cushioned surface, I worked with Toboyo global’s innovative foam “breathair”, an affordable, environmentally sound, lighwheight and anibacterial mesh, to create simple, and naturally aesthetically pleasing blocks which simple slot into the pieces frames without needing any type of bonding.
